The phone is not waterproof at all and you should never submerge any electronics You might have been lucky. Because as I try to press the power button it keeps on vibrating for a long time. Plus I thought Sony improved how well the touch-screen reacts while being wet compared to other models. You don't have to somehow "electrolyze" it first and then put it into some sort of special water! So we tried the new Z3 in our local swimming pool and the screen died.

We sat on this story for a long time. We had a number of emails from well-placed contacts citing this as a purposeful change from Sony. We even got in touch with Sony prior to publishing, but surprise surprise, no response.

In the end, we got as far as we could being an outsider to the company. We took the decision to post the story as it was already causing confusion from people that got in touch and it was only going to get worse as time went on.

Now that the story is out there, Sony needs to be very clear about where it stands on this waterproof issue. Don't use waterproof Xperia phones underwater, Sony says world news. Wodoodporne smartfony Sony ju? Just a word of caution, my first Phone failed while it was being washed, you could see water getting under the touchscreen: Do not use the device to take photos while performing any type of activity underwater, including diving or snorkeling.

Sony warns Xperia phone users not to use their device under water! Err … sorry … it is. Have had a problem with my z2 tablet with stuck pixels FOUR times. Logical but stop marketing it as waterproof then.

That or close up the usb port and use the magnetic port to charge and supply that charger as standard. So after all this time I put my Z1 under water died after I took my picture in a pool it finally died after 3yrs.

I call it misleading advertisement. I agree that was not very bright of them, they went overboard with oceanic ads… When the fine print says not to do that. The phones still have the IP68 rating which means that they are waterproof, a feature very few phones have.

It is a statement to prevent people from overdoing it and cover their ass from people who wanted a new phone just days before the warranty expires. A device which meets both tests is indicated by listing both tests separated by a slash, e.

Also, you seem to have stopped reading my long reply so let me condense it for you: All sony phones that are water proof must be washed with clean water after use in a pool, and they should not be exposed to salt-water.

Sony has always said this, but some people use them wrong… And then complains to sony about it. That is why they change it. Use it in clean water, not in the pool… Rubber gets ruined by the pool water… Sony has always said that….

I know that, they said it everywhere. I had my Sony Xperia Z2 damaged by washing it under the sink. Flaps closed but water still got in. Don't take your waterproof Xperia Z5 underwater, says Sony Almuzn. Don't take your waterproof Xperia Z5 underwater, says Sony world news.

And everyone who bought an Xperia for extra day to day protection wont care. I slipped getting a cab and my Z1C ended in the curbside with the drain water — fished it out and it was fine. The case kept it from cracking and the flaps from drowning.

Sony non consiglia di usare Xperia Z5 sott'acqua nonostante la certificazione. Sony wants you to stop using their waterproof smart phones underwater SoyaCincau. Like Camera especially RAW for example. Sony no longer wants you using their phones underwater Live Stream.

I have a Xperia Z, my phone never had been in contact with water, the only thing i use it a lot is in my morning runs. I had to pay euros to fix it. I have the humidity seal compromised, because of what? No because of idiots like him.

Watch how he tortures the phone over and over again. I stand corrected on that statement, but, at it also turns out, the M4 Aqua has the older, less paranoid disclaimer. Sony wants you to ignore its own marketing and stop using its Xperia devices underwater App Showcase Wordpress Theme.

So, using it in the pool for instance is fine, right? Read the footnote regarding the Xperia Z5 on its latest press release and you see why it is so confusing. From footnote 5 on talking about the Xperia Z5: Vodootporne Xperije ne bi trebali koristiti ispod vode Ekonomija.

Especially bought a Sony Z1 Compact to use a navigation device on my motorbike. Since it is waterproof, usable with gloves and works with a wet display. Also bought a navigation APP and traffic services for it. IP68 is IP68 I am not happy.

And the reason it says so is that people put them in every kind of water known to man… Not just clean water. And therefore they damaged their phones. So now, sony has to change their statement because of those people.

Can you use Xperia phones underwater? Well, I believe that nothing has changed in waterproof capabilities! They spill thick liquids such as oil or even submerge it in gooey stuff like peanut butter or something; hot boiling water, or drinks like Pepsi and then put it in the freezer.

However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects. The specification say immersion beyond 1m, and thus water pressure in a static pool should not matter.

It will definitely affect my buying decisions…. Don't use your waterproof Sony Xperia phone or tablet under water - Digital Answers. Sony xperia devices are not at all waterproof. They are water resistant. My xperia z1 got water damaged last month in a swimming pool.

I used it for photography underwater with all the flaps closed tightly for less then 10 mins with depth less then half feet. First the screen started flickring so I quickly removed it from water and switched it off.

And from then it never turned on. My warranty expired just before 2 months. Customer care has no answers to my questions regarding repairing cost. Definitely my last device from sony. Apple Music for Android enters beta, how many Ubuntu phones?

I sent it to Sony to fix it under the warranty. Will they fix it? The genius psychology behind Apple products. I returned my phone. I have to returned again. Or atmospheric pressure ratings. Where a hose or shower or diving into water create higher pressure than that depth.

Washing your phone under running water could also easily surpass the IP rating. Forcing water past the seal on the side. If you walked into a pool and submerged it it would be fine. Found this article 3 months too late.

Took my Z2 in the sea, works fine. Headphone socket is actually better than before I used it underwater, after cleaning it with some wd For those that purchased these devices and used them before they changed the terms, does the warranty still cover damage?

No problems whatsoever, except for some fine dust around the speaker grill after the phone dried up. I never cleaned the phone with fresh water. But then those of us who have common sense but received defective units that do not seal properly get fucked.

Part 5 Shooting the Breeze. I have never put my phone under under water. I do however sit it on the basin when I have a shower to listen to music. I purchased ed this phone because of the advertised waterproofing it has so being in a moisture rich environment and not submerged in an water should be a breeze.

My phone recently developed a fault with the antenna so I took it for repair. I was told it could not be repaired as it has water damage. Vodafone has washed there hands of it despite selling me the phone that I was told was waterproof upto 1.

The phone is being picked up by Sony tomorrow to fixed under warranty unless they feel it has been abused. I will be furious if they reach this verdict and will pursue the case with watch dog and trading standards under grounds of false advertising and the phone not being fit for purpose as advertised.

For tge first time, I recently used my Sony Xperia Z1 Compact in an underwater shoot for just a few seconds and found my handset dead. No power, dont charge. I did that because Sony claims their Xperia line is waterproof as their advertisements say so.

My handset is over 2 years old. Can I charge Sony for the repair of my damaged phone due to their false advertisement? How do I do it? This is total BS! I chose that phone especially to use it in water condition filming the kids swimming, diving etc.

My z5 just survived 2 hours in the washing machine. Today is the last day you can download PlayStation Mobile content. Xperia Z5 family supports most manual camera settings no RAW though.

Sony changes stance on waterproof phones: Other posts you might like: I have z3C and a fan of Sony! Great… Right after my Z3C got water damage yesterday. Have z and z1 compact. Wash it countless time. No problem for me.

Also no more swimming pool ads. See what you have done, people! Buy The ugly sammy active, i think it can make it. Yep, this is a good move. I bet they lost a lot of money bc of warrenty cases. Stop trolling with these lies, please.

What i think is the new capless usb port is the culprit behind the change in statement.. Do you read your comment and your mind before you post it? Z3 and z5 is. My almost 2 years Z Ultra still works fine underwater.

My z1 compact has survived two times with water in the battery area. Then its glaxy active all the way?.. Will sony release someting like Xperia active then? This is unrelated but z5 still does not support raw capture.

LOL This proves once again that Sony always was marketing company, in contrast to Samsung and other A brand companies. Always making two steps in the right direction while shooting themselves in the foot. Just be sure to use a strong tape.

You didnt see the new ads for Z5 lineup, its all about rain and no more underwater shot. I often use it under water. I always check seals before submersing it. Ok very imiture i was prepared on that answer, so childish and are u 5 years old?

But in fact, as we know, Sony promos and reality are — two big difference. Just back off this site okay, you little troll. Gue bales pake bahasa padang, jawa, sunda, madura, batak, sama indonesia tau rasa lu nyet. J Cav the Great.

Constantino Bernadas Arch Matt. I just ordered a Moto X Pure…. Maybe next year Sony Mobile will find themselves again. I dropped my z2 the first day I got it in a lake and it came up working fine. Drop it in the lake again, but this time leave it there overnight.

Report back to us. Could be, both have the broken English and attitude. The device is safe as long you are not doinf any kind of activity like diving PS: Have the Z3 Compact already 11 month and I wash it every day,no problems at all.

Guess better late then never, to change the policy, before more angry customers add up. How is the waterproofing on the Galaxy phones? Ip68 is fully waterproof, but not salt proof…. Nonsense they are trying to have their cake and eat it too through mixed messages.

So the marketing materials still do match what their legal team is saying. This is the Service Center. We have people with water-damaged phones demanding new replacements! You could have tested a few SONY phones underwater like this guy: You can even film underwater with the Z5.

I have several messages as proof from Sony UK and the sony official repair centre saying completely opposite views of the waterproofness of the phone. The phone is not waterproof at all and you should never submerge any electronics They repeated this message over the next few days even when I told them that Sony say the opposite.

I kept asking them and they said that it was all marketing, which I dont believe Sony would do. Risking every phone being refunded. I'd link a video but there are so many of them. I have a z2, it's waterproof. I know its waterproof, i was just amazed that the repair centre says that no phones are waterproof.

That makes no sense, Sony have said that it is waterproof so they are liable for a class action lawsuit, the official repair centre say it is not waterproof but Sony would still be liable? Oh it's waterproof by the ipx8 standards.

It only states continuous immersion in a certain depth. Nothing about moving water. The repair center isn't the ones making the claim of ip68 certification. The warranty blatantly states water damage isn't covered. Just because something is rated for something doesn't mean it is covered by the damage should that rating fail.

The rating is just there as a guideline. Also they have a point by saying that you really shouldnt be taking electronics into water. Even to test the rating. Long story short, it's their warranty, you agreed to it they don't have to cover you testing their product.

Except that in the adverts and real life they encourage you to put the phone in water and take photos. There is no way they would win a court case. You can put the phone in water. But they never say "stick it in rapid moving water and thrash it about forcing water into the phone!

As I said before an IPX8 rating is about immersion in water. Not conditions of the water you are in. They can resist splashes, rain, and even brief periods of full immersion in water assuming all the flaps are sealed.

This is true of EVERY "waterproof" smartphone except a handful of really expensive military-spec phones. While you may be able to use the Z3 as an underwater camera successfully, if the flaps leak or if anything goes wrong and the phone is damaged you are completely SOL on a warranty claim.

Therefore If I use my phone z1 compact underwater and something fails i never open the flaps as I charge magnetically , then it is my fault right? Need to speak to advertising standards.

Phone was in my pocket for 5minutes , pulled it out hairline crack across the top. Note that laws vary. It may be that warranty in your nation or state does cover water damage. I'm really only talking about the US and maybe Australia.

Do people not realize that the "1. The whole point is that if you're drunk and drop your phone in the can you're not going to be running around your kitchen spilling rice on everything 30 seconds later.

It's not a scuba-phone. Sony's advertising suggests it is a scuba-phone, Xperia z3. People don't realize it because Sony uses the term waterproof consistently through their marketing. Xperia Z3 is the smartphone that does more and goes further — whether further is a run in the rain or a dive in the pool.

With the highest waterproof rating, you can find your way in a downpour, take pictures underwater , or just wipe off your phone after an unexpected spill. Combined with a super-slim body and an aluminum frame, Xperia Z3 is the Android smartphone that teams durability with beauty.

Yeah, I noticed that in their marketing as well and I was less than happy to see it. I feel like it's going to bite them in the ass for mis-representing what the phone is actually capable of. IPX8 is actually continuous submersion as specified by the manufacturer, in generally it's around m of submersion.

IPx7 is 30 minutes and up to 1m of submersion. If they are marketing IPX8 and it isn't rated as such, that is a false advertising claim waiting to happen. I wonder if someone will make some waterproofing fail videos that go viral and cause a huge controversy.

This is true of every "waterproof" smartphone except a handful of really expensive military-spec phones. Then why on earth would they advertise it in a way that encourages you to take photo's underwater. Basically take a few pictures if you're in calm fresh water.

Don't use it in conditions that could allow water to get into the phone. Such as rough waters or salt waters, also if you drop it into shallow water and it hits rocks or the bottom of a bath for example the flaps can come out.

The IP Code , International Protection Marking , IEC standard , sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection Marking , classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion body parts such as hands and fingers , dust , accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures.

The standard aims to provide users more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof. The digits characteristic numerals indicate conformity with the conditions summarized in the tables below. Where there is no protection rating with regard to one of the criteria, the digit is replaced with the letter X.

For example, an electrical socket rated IP22 is protected against insertion of fingers and will not be damaged or become unsafe during a specified test in which it is exposed to vertically or nearly vertically dripping water.

Another example is the Sony Xperia Z Ultra , one of the first cellular phones to be IP-rated; it is rated at IP58 and marketed as "dust resistant" and can be "immersed in 1. IP22 or 2X are typical minimum requirements for the design of electrical accessories for indoor use.

It should only take a few minutes to answer five quick questions. Just click the Launch survey button at the end of your visit to begin. I'm sorry to hear that. As far as I can see, you have been in contact with your local support team which have given you the information that your phone passes the vacuum test which the service center has performed.

This shows that the phone has no leakage when the caps are closed. Unfortunately, I do not think there are any workaround if the phone is water damaged since the service center should replace the phone instead of repairing it.

Since they can not know if I swum or not with it, they have to repair it. Read more at http: Honestly im bit surprised since what is the benefit for going with very high IP ratings where customer will not ever submerge the phone GENTLY in a pool, I mean hello this is the real world not a lab.

Sony very well knew about the risk, and their promos was simply for attract buyers! Either the pins are prone to oxidation or Sony assumes that people are prone to forgetting to let the port fully dry out.

YOU are the news source here. I think the biggest concern is that the phones are not ridgid enough to keep water out. Try gently squeezing you phone between your fingers dead center. It WILL flex in, and then back out.

I noticed this on my Z Ultra. This is the best conclusion I could come up with…. I understand that when u are very childish: Because I AM a child. Everybody knows that children usually childish. It happens in different ways, like on your example, has no problem, but there are cases when the smartphone was drowning in glass of water.

Wow, who is the troll? U are everyone is aloud to write so long is not harassment, and u are drunk ur bully I not going to listen to u more now u are a moron,. It is simple, dedicat ed and easy way to get ric h.

Three weeks from now you will wish you have sta rted today — I promise!! I enjoyed it so much, that i said to my self i will buy only phones with IP certification. But now,i think i wont have Sony is as my next device, since Flex 2 is much better than Z3 for that price.

I know that Flex is not waterproof, but since Sony says i cant use Z3 under water neither…. Gue kira semua orang swedia baik baik, eh ternyata gak semuanya hahaha lol terserah kau je lah tak peduli pun aku, bleber mouth. I shined a light in the headphone jack an sure enough there was deposits.

I used some CLR in a Qtip an sure enough it started working again perfect. Minerals will build up on the usb port overtime, thus rendering it useless without proper cleaning or protection. How are those who have common sense suffering?

Thank you for this Sony. Now, I have decided not to buy Xperia z5 but buy a galaxy s6 or note 5 instead. Everyone knows that all those photos of people using their phones under water, in someway, persuaded them to purchase a phone.

Xperia fanboys, I get it, u will stand by your device no matter what corporation does. Same here, now other phones offer front facing speakers, and far more superior cameras, better specs, etc.. The only thing that made you stand out from the crowd is that when everyone has there phones around the pool, YOU can actually take yours inside.

I live the design of Xperia phones, but I think competitivly, Sony just leveled the playing field with the competition…. Not gently lowering into perfectly still purified water on he moon during a solstice.

Last time I was in a mission in the Persian Gulf, had to jump from a helicopter to the sea, kill a shark and swim very deep underwater to rescue a girl trapped in a sunken boat, then I went to look for a lost treasure hidden in a very old ship buried undersea, and luckily I found it.

And absolutely nothing happened to my Xperia Z3 compact! The phone does the job of surviving water sinking. Chances are it will be damaged due to shaking, whipping and hitting while underwater.

Sony raadt aan waterdichte telefoons niet onder water te gebruiken - SmarterHome. Sony changes its waterproof policy, says not to fully submerge phones - all tech idea. Don't use waterproof Xperia phones underwater, Sony says.

They should have user gold for the 3. Trust me you can put real gold in any kind of water and you get no oxidation. They should have used gold for the 3. Trust me you can put real gold in any kind of water without any kind of oxidation.

Just a bit slow. But if you go to any service center, you will have a replacement for sure. You just have to wait about 2 weeks. But I think Sony has NO WAY because I have seen some people enjoy their phones for long time and then they willingly damge the phone a few months before the warranty is over.

And then they take their water damaged phones to service center and get an absolutely new one as Sony was bound to do that. This is how some people renewed their phones. For these types of people, Sony had to change their policy and ultimately the honest people who will damage their their phones accidentally or for manufacturing defects will be hampered greatly.

Don't use Sony smartphones underwater Taiwan NO Don't use Sony smartphones underwater — Cath News India. Both ratings are necessary because you can conceivably have either one water protection without the other.

It should be noted, however, that these ratings are based on a brand new device using fresh water and with the device in a static position. I see this change in wording simply as a way for Sony to say that the device met IP65 and IP68 ratings out of the box as long as all flaps were closed but that they will not guarantee that the water resistance is maintained throughout the lifetime of the phone due to normal wear and tear and they will not be held liable for any water resistance failures.

It would be nice if they instead had a reasonable limited warranty in effect for water damage three months, six months…? Don't use Sony smartphones underwater insurance. I had my Z3 replaced under warranty due to water damage from taking pics of my toddler during bathtime..

Sony Xperia Z5 sono davvero waterproof? All sense of a sophisticated design is gone, and I have an expensive phone screen to display tacky menus. Now the Album app seems to be going the same way. Add all this to the waterproof turnaround which is one of the biggest backfires you could possibly manage hey, convince everyone to buy our phones by promoting a waterproof selling point, and then remove the waterproofness from your warranty!

When did Sony get so timid about smartphone waterproofing? I am angry about this personally. When my Xperia Z Ultra failed due to water leakage Sony did not cover it even though it was the headphone jack and not the covered ports.

Now my Xperia Z2 Tablet is not waterproof anymore? These devices were sold to me as water proof. This will be a factor in future purchases. There are so many other devices that can resist wate and dust. Sony purchase your own phone I am tired of your useless phones now.

Lost belief in Xperia. Don't use Sony smartphones underwater High Tech News. Once a certain Android-only app of mine is ported to iOS, I might just switch over to Apple for the first time. Also, Google and Microsoft under Satya Nadella are increasingly creeping me out regarding privacy.

And I want a true international software keyboard, not the half-hearted implementation found on Sony Xperia phones. Korean brands have clunky and unintuitive software. Chinese brands have dubious quality. Motorola is now the OEM slave of Google.

HTC makes questionable hardware choices. I rince it off under running water regulary, and sometimes even in alcogel to kill all bacteria. I have a Z3 that I actually just got back from warranty for water damage.

They sent me a new one. It was only down there for about 10 seconds, but it was enough to short out the phone and brick it. At least they honored the warranty though. Only problem was it took me about 2 months to get a replacement.

Meanwhile I bought a crappy S6 Edge to use. That actually bricked as well and had to be sent back under warranty. Glad to have my Z3 back. Anyone want to buy a brand new S6 Edge a recent warranty replacement? So what, I like the fact Sony is the only one having a wide range of phones that can handle the Dutch weather.

So no, no reason for me to start thinking about other smartphones. I had my Z3 replaced under warranty for water damage. I just got it back well, a new one, as a replacement Wednesday last week.

I just received my brand new Z3 warranty replacement after having water damage. They covered mine and the water sensors were tripped and it was obvious water damage. Sony no longer wants you using their phones underwater My Android.

Exact copies are never allowed, as are copies that are just slightly rewritten versions of original articles. Looks like the Xperia Z3 isn't waterproof after all.. I saw a guy un-box this phone underwater.

Then take a selfie. That's water proof enough for me. Yea haha I was being sarcastic because I am pretty sure most people on this sub have seen that video. When you buy the phone I would recommend you to try it in the store or at home but video filming you open and close all ports.

This to ensure that this dont happen to your device even if you are not planning to bath with it. I had a Z and took underwater videos all the time and it was great There's an option to lock the screen from 'touches', specifically so you can use the phone underwater.

The headphone jack has hydrophobic coating which means it doesn't need to be sealed. I'm not sure why headphones were registering though - that could be a sign of a faulty handset.

This is a bit of a poor point. The instructions clearly state that it's not good for use in salt water. Considering many phones aren't even waterproofed, I don't think it's a huge burden to not use it in the sea.

I've witnessed first-hand an Xperia Z3 30cm underwater for 4 hours just fine. Carphone Warehouse's underwater unboxing also went down without issue. I think they should definitely hold back on the waterproof slamming until they check with Sony and make sure the handset wasn't faulty.

Salt water has higher conductivity, might have caused the handset to register it as plugged in whereas fresh water wouldn't have registered. Which brings me back to point 3. The bit where Sony expressly warns of using the device in salt water.

The article states that the marketing specifically shows people using the phone around beaches, implying that it would be fine to submerge the phone in salty water. I've taken mine into the shower.

It worked afterwards, with a small amount of moisture on the camera lens that cleared up about a few days after. As for the whole touchscreen underwater thing Of course it's not going to work underwater. I don't know why they even expected it to work underwater.

How is this something they stuff up though, just last night my Z1 dropped into a sink because it vibrated itself in there and the tap was running. I didn't find it for a good few minutes but its perfectly fine. They said the freshwater part was relevant because Sony has commercials showing the phone used in the sea which is obviously not freshwater.

They are clearly over exaggerating is water proof capabilities. That is extremely relevant. That's pretty cheeky if true! Although I haven't seen any of those not Australian: P and the article didn't link any unfortunately.

I've only seen ones in fresh-water or swimming pools. Would you mind linking them here, just for reference? Would love to see some evidence. I might contact them and see if they can shed some light. I'll Pm if I find anything.

Just can't justify jumping on the bandwagon without evidence just yet! Don't you think the "clearly over exaggerating its water proof capabilities" comment is a bit premature then? I'm willing to concede foul play if we actually see some of this dodgy marketing material.

Until then, I can only go off the other reviews and my own experiences, all of which seem to confirm that the phone's waterproof functionality is pretty robust. I've seen pretty intensive first-hand testing of this thing and it's not failed once yet.

I hope I'm not sounding like a contrarian - all I'm saying is that the general consensus seems to be the waterproofing is solid, and until we're actually presented with dodgy marketing, it's awfully premature to slam them for it!

Again I stated that I was assuming this article to be truthful. If it is telling the truth then these pieces of marketing exist. I personally have 0 interest in the phone so I'm just going to believe the article at face value.

It's my argument I can base it on anything I want. I didn't come here to argue about a phone. You asked me a question and I answered. Unless your next reply is "thank you" then feel free to fuck off.

It may still be an issue. How is sony going to react to water damage if you try to get a replacement? Will they just claim you went too deep? And if they only have a 1 year warranty while phones are used at least 2 years, then potential defects could cost you some money.

Regarding your first point, I assume they'd dry the handset out and do their own tests in normal underwater usage and check for leakages there. Regarding the second point, I'm not sure about anywhere else, but according to my GB warranty sheet , the Sony Xperia Z3 comes with a 2-year warranty.

Subject to the conditions of this Limited Warranty, Sony warrants this Product to be free from defects in design, material and workmanship at the time of its original purchase by a consumer. This Limited Warranty will last for a period of two 2 years as from the original date of purchase of the Product for your mobile device.

So it should be fine and covered under warranty for a normal mobile lifespan, assuming normal usage. They will if it's faulty.

I have never had a problem. This is nothing new. My Z1 and my Z3 are truly waterproof. I have 2 fully functional devices and some underwater pics to prove it. Or or or, what if someone made a bumper case that also seals the USB port?

Best case scenario in not covering too much of the phone AND really keep it waterproof. This is a good idea from Sony, play it safe but this might be their undoing too as the killer feature in the Z series has always been the waterproofing.

Dont get me wrong some have been defected, my Z for example was waterproof for ages and I took it on holiday last year to Bali and with the conditions there it was very hot and humid so when i did have the phone underwater it worked perfectly throughout the holiday.

It even slipped out of my hands underwater and hit the bottom of the pool which was 3m deep I think. What happened afterwards was weird. The atmospheric conditions fogged up the camera lens so I had to wait for that to clear up but with it being humid it took a lot longer.

Water got in there but nowhere else and all I needed was a replacement. My Z still to this day works perfectly and I was told it has lost its waterproofing but I still wash my phone in the sink now and again and it hasnt affected it.

A t-mobile rep told me they were having issues with people returning their Xperia z3 after being damaged in the pool. Obviously these customers were giving the waterproof rating for granted, I have been careful with my Xperia Z1c and it still shoots pictures underwater after 1 year.

If the waterproof feature were really that desirable, many waterproof Xperia phones would be flying off shelves based on that merit alone. I guess Sony could no longer handle the numerous support calls from users having their supposedly waterproof phones damaged by immersion in water.

Then stop bragging about the waterproof feature in your product commercials. Or get rid of the waterproof feature, and give us the slim bezels found on the C5 Ultra. Okay that solves it.

Because it is just so unacceptable that even they protected the usb port too, but that is too fragile. I will not stop bragging because i can still have some shower and wash my phone if we both me and my z3 are dirty or just want to have shower together.

If I cannot use the Xperia devices inside swimming pool then seriously there is no point advertising it as waterproof phone. It stupid strategy, Sony has nothing left other than waterproofing and if they are so scared with open USB port — keep using flap, dont do fake advertisements.

Does matter too much? No not really, all waterproof allows you to do is take photos or a video underwater, no biggy. So without a need, e. The water may enter, as you can not observe the minor defects that occurs with the passage of time.

Try water resistant instead of waterproof which in turn can give user better sounding dual speaker, slimmer bezels etc. It just like any android phone. And there are a lot of Android phones out there that are cheaper and have more features and are also durable.

This has to be for warranty issues. Pretty sure if an Xperia can survive this http: I hate having doors over the charging port because the doors have a poor design and get knocked off with the first 2 types.

I got a z3 and gently walked into a pool and submerged it less than a foot. It immediately shut down and never came back on. I returned it to T-mobile store as faulty. I was so excited to see Z5 with no port cover, but then they put this out.

I live in Florida and should be able to use my phone in heavy rain, shower, and a shallow submergent in a pool like the ip68 claims. Plus I thought Sony improved how well the touch-screen reacts while being wet compared to other models.

If not then I might as well get a life proof case for an S6. Well this waterproof strategy is simply for marketing purposes IMO. With how their phones now have open ports USB , the waterproof idea is becoming less convincing.

I had a great fun using Xperia Z1 on pool, water slides and in sea. My Z1 and Z1 Compact worked perfectly fine in the ocean. Done it many times. Well i can count, fortunately. Exactly my thought, so many people have complained about that their Xperia device has gotten waterdamaged.

Yet I have never heard of such thing among my friends who have an Xperia device in the z line and have tested to submerge it in freshwater. My over 2 years old can handle water just fine and trust me it has gotten a lot of smashes down in floors of different kinds every now and then: They are in a mess on their marketing.

But, my Z5 first day order remains in place… I only used the Z1 a few times in a Jacuzzi so wont really miss that too much. IP68 means it can be submersed for up to 30 minutes to at least cms… yet how can it go down over 15x the length of the phone if it must not be completely submersed!

This proves once again that Sony always was marketing company, in contrast to Samsung and other A brand companies. In the global page where Sony is referring to water and dust protection, there is no distinction made between smartphones from or earlier.

Therefore, it IS confusing. Plus all of the recent flagships are IP68 certified, therefore any normal person would assume that the same policy applies to all phones with this certification. Until we know for sure, we would take it as read that this policy applies universally, unless you can show us somewhere that suggests the and older Xperia models are excluded?

But Sonys own marketing made a big thing of it. I know 3 people who used their z3s under water myself included and all 3 died. Mine had all flaps closed. The phone was 20cm under the water. It took 2 photos then died. I opened the SD slot.

There was a build up of dust and gunk on the rubber gasket. Maybe that allowed the seal to perform badly. I am still in for the Z5. I am quite satisfied with my xperia V, Z1 and Z3. I am most of the time cycling and running rain or shine so at least i will not be worried if my phone will conk out when it get wet during my workout.

I think it is still the best waterproof phone in the market. Sony should update their advertising. Maybe the Sony owner is sitting by the pool taking photos of their friends. One of them is splashing them.

The last waterproof z was the first z nightmare to get flaps open but did there job. All Sony had to do was include charging dock then flaps less of problem since original z flaps open far too easy it if you drop flaps jump open so totally useless anyway.

You have a point about water pressure. I was thinking along the line of wear and tear. USB ports are used so frequently even more so without wireless charging. Now that the USB ports are capless and exposed, any wear and tear overtime from plugging and unplugging may be more damaging to the phone than one with flap covering the port.

This disclaimer has been in use since the launch of which phone and applies to which models? So what is the common link between those devices? The exposed USB port! Maybe Sony have seen some issues with water ingress from the USB port and being cautious, logical.

Maybe you should take better care of your devices. You talk about sitting on it, leaving it in the sun to warm up. Well, do you not read the usage warnings that come with electronic devices? All state the desired operating environments, such as temperature ranges, humidity and most will tell you not to leave your device in direct sunlight.

Common sense again seems to be lacking. That means having a fatter body, but you have a unique selling feature for appealing to customers. So, xperia phones are not waterproof anymore. And naturally they blame sony because the commercial.

Sony, basta de mentiras: I washed my z3 in fresh water 5 min ago. Its 1 y old. Now then again i take care of it. Or it might be a problem when you press the Camera Button. I took my Xperia Z1 to the pool multiple times, without issues.

So yeah, they can indeed be used under water just fine. That should never be possible. Rubber deteriorates after some time. But, when I went swimming with my Xperia Z1, I used a tight thick rubber band over my device to make sure the flaps were very tightly closed, to minimize potential trouble.

I would never drop the phone under water nor move it quickly through water. Those are things that allow water pressure to get in the flaps despite conforming the use cases that Sony used to have for waterproof phones i.

I have an Xperia z3 that stopped working not because I was swimming but because I have it in my pocket during a heavy rain. The phone was advertised as waterproof. When I contacted technical support, then told me to call the warranty department.

Customer service is crappy. Only a few days ago I was using my Xperia Z2 in the sea, taking pictures of fish underwater. Even with the currents of that salty water my Z3 came out fine. They should not advertise their products as being waterproof to up to 1.

If I buy a product that is advertised as being waterproof and can be immersed to up to one and a half meter, which is what IPx8 means, I expect to be able to do so with no damage, or at least for the manufacturer to repair it if there is damage.

I have taken photos and videos underwater.. The same happened with me i m regretting mah decision.. Dat i bought sony i think the company is being overrated nd should be banned if u cnt offer us d option of waterproof its kk bt atleast u mention it u assholes i hv wasted mah money on uh..

The company like xiaomi which is nt much known as urs offers much better dan uh.. U must shut ur company u dnt deserve to be such a big brand name… Shame on uh. I will never believe their waterproof products.

Voided warranty if water has been detected. I also have an Xperia Z2 and I bought it from Siba. After less than 30 minutes in a pool my experia z2 died! I agree with you, Vincent! I have also been through such experience from Samsung some months ago.

They are kind of expert in shifting the blame on to the users. I was just looking at the phone today also and found the water damage indicators behind both flaps are still white and hence havent been exposed to water. I called sony to tell them this and they say that it doesnt matter because their air pressure test says the phone is watertight so it must be my fault in some way.

So basically i cant win with them even though there is proof that water hasnt entered from the only places that i the user can open on the phone! I have had the exact same issue with my Xperia Z2, only i think the water has entered from the 3 holes at the bottom of the phone, as water kept dripping out of these hours after the screen had died.

I couldnt turn my phone off either after realizing water had gotten inside, and ended up sending it away to a service center for assessment. They concluded that it was user fault as their air pressure tests deemed the phone airtight and therefore watertight.

The iPhone somehow manages to meter and focus almost instantly most of the time whether in extremely bright, direct sunlight or virtual darkness. While initial exposures of dark subjects might look brighter on a Sony after taking them, closer inspection reveals that the iPhone is far better at capturing detail.

Conversely, the Sonys up the ISO-rating to the point where grain is extreme and the picture near unusable, if it's in focus at all. This was actually the best Z3 image we took of this scene which was akin to a moderately-lit nightclub.

The iPhone 6 Plus managed much better all night. Click here for full resolution. The Sony's camera is still good and capable of greatness, but the iPhone 6 Plus along with its almost-steady-cam like video and outstanding super slow motion feature has redefined what we expect from a phone.

The Z3 still takes highly-detailed and colour-accurate shots in well-lit environments. But it wasn't all bad for the Sony which boasts some interesting robust features which, theoretically, allow it to be used under water at up to one metre for thirty minutes.

We got some great shots in our local pool, but not without major issues. For one thing, the screen constantly read water droplets as button presses so we had to constantly restart the camera by holding down the shutter button and using that to shoot with.

Also, the headphone jack, which isn't sealed, kept registering that headphones had been inserted and all manner of options kept popping up. You can't take pictures like this on many other smartphones.

But then we don't recommend you do so on a Sony either as our unit packed up shortly after taking these. Switching to video became impossible as the screen refused to respond in water. However, eventually it went blank altogether and didn't turn back on.

While the rest of the phone works fine, we still can't see the screen after three days drying out. Basically it failed its waterproof test. We would not recommend you put this phone in water if you've spent hundreds of dollars on it.

Having run into this problem with other ruggedized phones before we were very careful about not submerging the phone too deeply and made a point of not doing so. All flaps were double checked too. This is a major problem as Sony Australia has a great deal of marketing material showing its phones and tablets being used in the sea.

Also, many of Australia's swimming pools are salt-water based. While it might be safe to get away with such waterproof claims in other regions - this is Australia! You can't ignore those details here. We'll be pushing for more information from Sony in this regards.

We did and Sony responded. A potentially highly-desirable feature of the the Z3 is its ability to hook up with a PlayStation 4 so that you can use the screen on the phone as a game screen by mounting it on a controller.

We haven't been able to test this yet as the feature still isn't widely available. Early tests sound promising but we'll have to reserve judgement for now.

These are just a couple of examples that were quickly found whilst writing this post. In our test unit Z3, while it was drying out we'd rinsed it anyway blue copper corrosion appeared around the contacts inside the headphone jack. Common sense again seems to be lacking. After less than 30 minutes in a pool my experia z2 died! Also, who remembers the countless press pictures that Sony Mobile has used showing its new Xperia devices underwater. While initial exposures of dark subjects might look brighter on a Sony after taking them, closer inspection reveals that the iPhone is far better at capturing detail.
