Its sides are impostor aluminium, and while the back tries to pass for glass, only the front is real glass. I think it's a decent midrange phone,ph. You can launch the camera at any time, half press for focus and fully press to activate the shutter. It's not quite as flexible as the curved side screen of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge , but once you get to know the colours, it's not a bad little additional feature. Probably gonna buy this while I wait for z5. It's fully waterproof, too, allowing it to survive not only a spilled drink but also a full dip in the tub.

It's selling point is that it's waterproof -- but is that enough to distinguish this mid-range smartphone? The M4 Aqua is an Xperia device through and through, with slim, rectangular and somewhat austere design cues we've seen on the much more expensive Z3 and others.

The 5-inch screen isn't full HD one of many compromises made to get the M4 Aqua down to a pocket-friendly price but it offers standard HD resolution of 1,x pixels ppi. This is suitable for everyday tasks, particularly if your phone is primarily a communication tool, but it won't impress if you are into photo editing or spend a lot of time watching videos.

Sony claims that just like other Xperia phones, the M4 Aqua is waterproof. It is fully protected against will protect against dust, but its waterproof rating will only stand up to rain and jet spray. You'll probably be okay taking it into the shower if you must but we wouldn't recommend dipping it in the bath.

It's good to see that the M4 Aqua's microUSB power point doesn't have a cover, which saves fiddling about when you need to charge up at the end of every other day. Battery life put in a good show, comfortably managing around two days of steady use.

The M4 Aqua is running a Sony-tweaked version of Android 5. Combined, these serve the phone well, since it's nippy and swift in operation, with no obvious signs of lag even when running a handful of apps at once.

Our AnTuTu benchmark test gave it a score of 32,, which puts it firmly at the higher end of mid-range territory, although far behind the high-end phones that like the HTC One M9, the LG G4 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 -- the best phones of so far.

The megapixel camera on the back comes with autofocus and an LED flash, plus a few extra features like HDR, red-eye reduction and more. Sony's array of settings and tweaking options looks impressive, but picture quality's a bit of a let-down, with less detail than you might expect.

Autofocus can be a little slow to react. It's possible to get some okay photos out of it, but you'll need to take some care with your light and your timing. The 5 megapixel camera on the front is no slouch though, and at least shows that Sony isn't oblivious to the rise of the selfie.

There's not a huge amount of memory on board -- just 8GB and Sony does you no favours by packing the phone with bloatware , but you can add up to GB more via microSD card. The Sony Xperia M4 Aqua is a solid mid-range, 4G-equipped phone that has certain benefits for outdoorsy and clumsy types, even if it's perhaps not quite as waterproof as its name implies.

There's a decent processor on board but while the distinctive styling will be admired by some, it'll be hated by others. Up close, it does feel a touch less luxurious -- that band is plastic, not metal, for one -- and it's slightly fatter than the Z3, too, at 7.

The plain black design or white, or a pinkish-orangeish colour , minimalist Sony branding and raised silvered power button are the other elements the M4 borrows from the Z3. It really won't be difficult to trick people into thinking you shelled out for its more expensive brother.

It's fully waterproof, too, allowing it to survive not only a spilled drink but also a full dip in the tub. The physical camera button lets you take photos underwater, making it ideal for trips to the sea or the pool when you're on holidays.

Sony also performed some wizardry on the Micro-USB charging port by removing the rubberised cover while still keeping water out. On the Z3 I was frequently frustrated at having to open a fiddly little flap every time I put the phone on charge, so this is a welcome change.

The microSD port and SIM card tray keep their rubberised covers, but you won't have to remove those nearly as often. The 5-inch display has a 1,xpixel resolution, which results in a density of pixels per inch.

That's not as high as the full-HD Z3 ppi or the monstrously high-resolution LG G4 ppi , but it's perfectly adequate to make your everyday apps look sharp and small text in Web pages is perfectly readable.

The colours are reasonably accurate, and there's an option in settings to change the colour balance of the screen if you'd prefer it a little warmer. It's not a bright screen, however, as it struggled to counter the overhead lights in my house, resulting in my own face reflecting back at me.

It performed even worse outside under bright sunlight. The phone comes with 8GB of built-in storage. The Android software takes up half of that space, with most of the rest going to the preloaded bloatware that clogs this phone. In the end, there's only 2.

Forget about popular games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas -- it's way too big. You'll therefore absolutely need to slot in a microSD card, but you can also help yourself by deleting as much of the bundled software nonsense as possible.

Sony has a habit of loading extra software on board its phones, and it's outdone itself on the M4 Aqua. As well as preloading a bunch of annoying widgets on the home screen, you'll find apps like AVG, OfficeSuite and a whole load of Sony services.

It all adds up to the phone feeling cluttered and bloated before you've even downloaded your first app. You can at least delete a few of the bundled apps and remove the home-screen widgets, but you can't remove everything. As a compromise, try hiding the unwanted apps in a folder where they're easier to ignore.

The phone arrives running Android 5. Sony has applied the same user interface over the top of Android that you'll find on most of its recent phones, including the flagship Z3. Other than the needless amount of preinstalled junk -- which I won't annoy myself with again -- I don't mind Sony's Android skin.

It's particularly easy to reorder your app icons in the app tray using the side menu, and it doesn't change too much in the way you actually navigate the phone, making it fairly easy to get to grips with. Powering the phone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor -- that's an octa-core chip, backed up by 2GB of RAM, which is a fair amount of power for a midrange phone.

It racked up 21, on the Quadrant benchmark test, which is a healthy score; everyday use of the phone seemed mostly fine. Apps opened reasonably quickly, and although there was the odd bit of stuttering when swiping around the interface, it wasn't annoying.

Netflix played video perfectly well, I could edit images in Adobe Photoshop Express without any trouble and games like Asphalt 8 played smoothly. Of course, that was only once I deleted enough stuff to install the apps in the first place.

For everyday tasks like social networking, the phone will do fine even if it doesn't have the nippy, immediate feel of its pricier, more powerful sibling.

It has similar specs to the more expensive Samsung Galaxy A5. This price puts it in that slightly strange mid-range bracket where cheaper phones often have comparable specs and older flagships are only a little bit more expensive but have more to offer.

One of the best things about the M4 Aqua is that it doesn't look or feel like a mid-range smartphone. You could easily confuse this with the flagship Xperia Z3 since it has all the same style and design traits. You do notice the plastic edging rather than metal when holding it and the glass rear cover doesn't sit entirely flush with the edge at the top and bottom.

Neither are big issues and the phone pulls off the premium look at half the price extremely well. With the M2 Aqua, Sony brought the dust- and waterproofing which was previously reserved for the high-end Z range to a cheaper smartphone.

We like the size of the M4 Aqua since it's not too small and not overly large and therefore a handful. It will feel comfortable to most users and the Xperia M4 Aqua is very thin and light for a mid-range phone at 7.

It will be available in black, white, silver and coral. This is Sony's first smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon octa-core quad-core 1. Not bad for the asking price but it's worth noting that you'll need a memory card as there is only just over 1GB of available storage out-of-the-box.

Performance is perfectly good for a phone of the this price. It's smooth most of the time with only really the camera which takes a bit of time to load and that's mostly the first time you load it. As you can see below the Xperia M4 Aqua outpaces the pricier Galaxy A5 in three out of four benchmark tests and beats the Honor 6 in the graphics departments with its lower resolution display.

None of the results are particularly impressive but as we've said, there's no issue with performance here. The screen has jumped from 4. You're getting a decent screen for a mid-range smartphone with a pixel density of ppi. There's good colour reproduction, brightness and viewing angles on offer here.

We'd like Full HD in terms of resolution so look elsewhere namely the Honor 6 if this is a must. There aren't really any other features to mention such as wireless charging, an IR blaster, fingerprint scanner or things of this nature.

Sony really focuses on the photography, battery life and waterproof design. As per usual on Sony phones, the battery is hidden away under the shiny exterior and you can't access it. Although there's no wireless charging, keeping the Xperia M4 Aqua topped up is much easier now thanks to that waterproof USB port.

Sony touts a two day battery life, like it does with premium Z range devices and we've found this to be true. The combination of a Snapdragon processor and a p display works out well for energy efficiency. Didn't use to be affraid and don't listen to others opinion it is very good i love it.

The back of the phone is home to a megapixel camera, which is a step down from the impressive Megapixels certainly don't equal better photos, however, so I took it for a spin to see what it's capable of.
